Today or tomorrow or the next day

within a long walk from me, the excellent Chris Smither is playing. Unfortunately I won't be seeing him. So for all you people who (understandably, I suppose) think I think American culture sucks, I include my unreplied to post from Admin, explaining (I hope) my difficult personality.
It was important to me.
Maybe he's from New Orleans?

You are all very kind. Like someone else here once, I too feel like 'a clueless unnacomplished nuisance'.

Chris Smither in his excellent "Leave the Light On" (a plea, I'm sure) does a version of Dylan's "Visions of Johanna" which is fully equal to the original. Done as a resigned, reflective, melancholy walz, the new version has its own truth, which for me is that it is impossible to listen to it and not weep for what has happened to our world in the intervening 40 years.

I'm sorry that my difficulties with all this interfere with my sociability.

i think american culture is very hard to understand. i'm american as apple pie and fast food, rock music and hollywood, and i have yet to put into words my idea of what exactly american culture is. it's jsut hard to think that what people read in the newspapers or see on the news reflects so much on the 'regular us' out here, you know? (and i don't think that anyone thinks american culture sucks, i think that it's portrayed poorly around the world right now, focusing on the wrong things, ect)

but, i think you're pretty wonderful declan. might not mean much, but it's honest. and i find your personality anything but difficult dear.

take care of yourself.

here's another kulture to konsider

The Canadians, eh?
For the best approximation of what that elusive quality of culture means to us Canadians, and especially to us ex pat citizens, I highly recommend the book "Mondo Canuck" as the Guinness Book of World Records-type of publication. It lays out all the major accomplishments, and moments both of national pride and shame, with particular attention paid to pop culture.

I wasn't offended.

It did occur to me to wonder how much people from outside the U.S. consider regionalism. I'm not saying Americans don't have a national identity or don't consider that we share certain qualities. But as far as culture goes, there are any number of regions who consider their culture to be separate and distinct from a collective national culture. Although clearly that might be overstated, since television, etc. is national and ratings are likely uniform across the country.

I've missed talking to you in chat. I found you to be quite charmingly sociable. I hope that when I have leave to chat again that I find you there.

I was almost too frightened to open the box.
What I wrote was a circuitous apology to you.

One Buddhist said that if we lived forever we would become heartsick.

How can you grow older without getting heartsick?

The US is very regional, very divided, from what I've seen, as you might expect in a country of its size.

You know that in the whole of Australia there is only one detectable regional accent? (South Australia).
Isn't it said that the US is a country of small towns? This is hard to understand here. Go 50 miles west and the people end, pretty much. They all live on the coast, like me.

Awww, you never have to be afraid of opening a post by me. Well, not me as me anyway. :)

Thank you for the apology, but as I said it isn't really necessary.

I'm not sure how many small towns there are any more. It seems that cities are spreading and towns are becoming more bedroom communities. But that may not be true nationwide. And maybe with telecommuting, the trend will reverse itself.

You ought to come see for yourself some day! I know I've always wanted to visit Australia and soak up a bit of that culture. :)
