Anybody else have problems with money?

Posted by TexasChic on May 4, 2007, at 19:59:48

I'm trying to get the hang of getting paid once a month, but here I am, 10 months into it, and with three weeks until my next paycheck I now have $50 in my bank account. WTF??? I don't even know what happened to it all! I do this every month and it just makes me sick! I just blow it on crap! Eating out all the time when I know I can't afford it, buying a bunch of crap at Walmart, just stupid sh*t! I get to the end of the month where I'm really hurting and eating ramen noodles, then I get paid and I'm so happy to have money I spend like crazy and next thing I know I'm eating ramen noodles again. I just needed to express my frustration with my utter lack of self control. Thanks for listening/reading.

It's one of the major issues in my life, and I really don't try to work hard enough on it.

All I do is resolve not to do it, and then I get tired or stressed or angry or just plain obsessive, and I do it again.

:(

I reduced my credit card limits to almost nothing and asked the credit card companies not to automatically raise them. It's helped a whole lot. For the most part, on one card I have enough to buy the groceries, etc. for about a month. The other card has a very low limit too.

I guess it keeps me out of serious debt, but I still spend too much.

Disability check very small once a month. First the car payment, then the medical bills, then the doctors, then the meds, and then if anything left over never is maybe some flowers for the yard, or facecream. Not much. Oh well maybe the EBAY will pay off. Love Phillipa

Hello

I'm no saint when it comes to cash but I do try and I think I'm fairly on top of things most of the time (which is good enough I suppose!)

Okay so what you want to do is make a budget.

Work out how much goes out in a month in terms of bills and rent etc

Then work out how much you're going to have in a week to spend on food and bits and bobs and I guess, as you have a car, fuel.

Then take out the said amount each week from your bank in cash (i like thursdays coz then you've got the weekend) and that is your weekly allowance for everything. Then you can see how much literally in front of you what you have for the week. And it helps coz you're doing everything in cash (which I assume is possible in the states?)

Voila. You're not spending more than you should at the begining of the month because its weekly thing still. And when I'd go to the shops, I'd just take the cash and leave the bank cards at home. then you can't spend more than your budget and you're not tempted to put anything on any cards.

I also went through a phase of having a credit card in my wallet (for emergencies, what emergencies I don't know!) but having several turns of sticky tape wound round it. So I couldn't suddenly use it without thinking about my purchases. I've heard that someone put the card in a beaker of water, then put it int he freezer - it'd freeze so you couldn't use it easily, and by the time it had defrosted you'd have come to your senses and you wouldn't need it anymore!

And do online banking. I find that helps LOADS. You can see everything onscreen etc etc.

I also think that managing money etc should be taught in schools.

Kind regards

Meri

will remember not to ask you to marry me though :)

sorry, don't want to marry someone with more money problems than i.

remember though, you'll get used to getting paid once a month. seems to me, it'd be hard to get used to. but, at least you can get all your bills paid up front.

why can't we pay bills with our good looks and sea shells, like the old times? that seems fair, no?

poor here too,

kk

Great advice everyone! I no longer use credit cards because I'm out of control with them. So I just use cash. I actually do get all my bills paid upfront by getting paid once a month, its just keeping from blowing all my spending money that I have trouble with. Meri-tulli's advice about getting cash out once a week sounds like a good idea. I spend too much using my debit card, I guess like I did my credit card. Its kind of an instant gratification type thing I guess.

Thanks everyone.
