Help me break out of my introvert rut

Posted by DannaB on May 5, 2007, at 22:30:16

I have posted about this before. Basically, I am an introvert and it's *really* hard for me to push myself to meet new people or do new things. I always seem to have an excuse..."yes, ultimate frisbee sound fun but I don't want to commit to it," "I love yoga but I can't afford it" or "I would love to go out tonight but I'm just SO TIRED. For some reason, I am scared to try new things even though I'm bored and lonely a lot of the time.

Sometimes I almost feel like I need another friend to act as my security blanket. I do have one friend who I do things with, and I enjoy trying new things with her. But she's very busy and I need to learn how to push myself to do things on my own.

DannaB, I so know what you mean about finding it hard to get out of the house. Someone told me once, "sometimes you need to give yourself a little kick in the butt to start going." That helped me.

Maybe you could try going out to something you really feel excited about and feel non threatened.

Dana
Have you thought of meditation?
Meditation seems to be about doing absolutely nothing (not even thinking).
Maybe if you were to do this for a bit (with the good excuse it provides) you might feel like you had more energy to do stuff after?
OTOH, I can imagine you might feel that you did not want to commit to it.
Last night I spent a couple of hours just lying on my bed and staring. I was asked 'What have you been doing?' and I replied 'Absolutely nothing'.

Best of luck,

it's not easy to push ourselves to do things that are really hard.

Any chance of telling that friend your situation & seeing if she can introduce you to any of her other friends who you might feel OK with?

Let us know how it goes, OK?

:-) Kath

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. I'll let you know how it goes. Meditation is an interesting idea...my head is always buzzing with a million thoughts so I'm not sure if I would be able to quiet it down :)
