My husband has many names, and after Sunday, he has added another to his long list of names: Brave Sir Waspbane! The Mighty Wasp Hunter!
(Actually, he's asked me to stop calling him that, but he also asked me to post about his feat on the board, so you'd all know how brave and wonderful my great protector is. So, I'm respecting his wishes on both counts.)
On Sunday, I was merrily reading and posting on this site (and a sewing site), when suddenly a ginormous wasp began buzzing its way up the sliding glass door which is in front of my desk! Horrid creature, it was practicing its menacing mein before attacking me. So, I leapt from the desk chair -- no easy feat, mind you, for a middle aged woman with bad knees who sits with legs folded under her on a desk chair -- and raced up the stairs. I don't believe I screamed on the way up, although I know I did swear a bit. If I screamed, though, it was definitely a girly scream.
My brave husband leapt into action! He procured a clear glass coffee mug from the kitchen, and slapped it over the evil hymenoptera. Then, with my able assistance, he located a piece of stiff cardboard. After only a brief pause for me to race in terrified manner up the stairs again, he slid the cardboard over the mouth of the mug, trapping the wasp inside, and then took it back out onto the balcony, where he left it. Several hours later, he returned and dumped the thing out over our balcony.
Thus, my brave protector rescued me from a menacing member of the order hymenoptera.
Thank you for your time and attentionen. You may now return to your regularly scheduled activities.

Racer, I salute the ex-Sir Waspbane, with many waves of my plumed hat.
I congratulate this slayer of hymenoptera, for his most manly feats. How resplendent, in this era of micro-men to know that one hero yet remains among homo sapiens, this once great species of ours.
Indeed, he instills in me some hope that we may yet return to our former greatness. A clear glass mug and cardboard and cadaver of a slain wasp must be inscribed upon his family insignia-- in remembrance of this remarkable afternoon. If only his example could be trumpeted through the hills and vales, to inspire the young champions among us! Then, we shall regain that glory, yet.
Sigh.
Did I tell you about the brave encounters of my own SigO with a terrible buzzing mosquito, through a night in Florence, in a hotel without any screens? It was attacking me in a most violent manner, when he came to my assistance. However, that's a story for another day.
Honore

Ah, husbands are so delightful at times. I can manage bugs ok, although I am a bit too blase about them for my son's taste. But those little transparent geckos nearly send me into hysterics due to an unfortunate painting incident. My dear husband is fabulous at humanely trapping them and releasing them safely outside.
A very brave husband you have. Wasps are nasty little critters. And you've reminded me to send my husband out to remove the wasp nest hanging over our front door.
