OK, the hamster I got first died after around a week. The pet store said there had been several other deaths. The sales associate told me that they died of old age, which is a total lie because those hamsters where only babies.
After a few weeks I go another hamster, from a pet store because I couldn't get in touch with the two people who wanted to give up their hamsters.
I still have to name my hamster. I'm pretty sure it's a girl. She's greyish black with white areas around her eyes and nose. She extremely timid. She bares her teeth and holds her paws up at me when I make sudden moves. I'm going to have to be patient with her. Maybe she's been tramatized.
Even though I have a hamster now, I'm still infected with the want to get a pet bug. LOL
My latest obsession are pet rats. I've been doing research on them and I would love to have a pair of male rats. I described the size of the cage to my Mom and she said no way. :-(
I wouldn't get a rat right away. I'll need to do several months of research on them first. The thing that really ignited my interest was that I found out there is a hobbyist rat breeder in Ottawa and I've been to her website and she sounds really experienced and responsible. She's quite famous in the rattery world.
I want a pair of rats sooo bad. LOL I hear they make great pets. They're very intelligent. They have a bad reputation because people think sewer rats when they think rats. Wild rats are totally different.
I love my hamster, but hamsters are fairly low maintainance and non interactive. Mine sleeps all the time and gets up at like 3am so I hardly ever see her out and handle her. I wake her for short periods just to handle her a bit so she doesn't go wild, but I do that only for short periods.
Rats on the other hand are highly social and need human attention.

Hi Deneb, That was an interesting post!
My daughter & her friend used to have rats. They were great pets. The both ended up dying of cancer though (at different times). The only thing I'd suggest in your research, is to check out how prone to cancer rats are (I think I remember my daughter saying that they were prone to getting cancer) & what their average life-span is, just to know ahead of time.
As I've said before, you sound like a GREAT pet owner!!!
hugs, Kath

Somehow I can't picture a rat as a pet but I guess different pets for different people. Phillipa
