EARTH DAY - or hour - I'm operating on battery

Posted by Kath on March 29, 2008, at 19:13:21

We have all our lights off, for what it's worth.

It feels sort of artificual somehow, to decide at 8 pm - "okay, now I'm going to turn off all the lights & use candles or batteries, & help with conservation & help the environment"

I feel almost a bit embarrassed about it. Like, yes - I'll do it now. But do I always use as little electricity as possible? Do I always turn out lights in the rooms I'm not in & use as few lights? I'm pretty good at that actually, but I feel sort of silly.

Was wondering what other people are doing/thinking.

Kath, we do too. Our house is always sort of dark. I like it that way. I leave the heat/cool at the most energy efficient setting. We have a new house so that is good for using little heat/cooling. Our heat/electric bill was low this past winter/summer.
We are always turning off lamps and I have unplugged appliances not in use as they still use electricity if plugged in even if they are off. Like your cell phone charger, they pull electricity even if not connected to the phone and so do all appliances. Not much but if you add all your not in use appliances up I guess you x over all the households it adds up. Anyway, I do my small part.

Lights on or the pups would be very scared and we stay up late with work. So we're very bad at that. Phillipa
