Great. One more thing animals can do that I can't... ;)

Did you see the elephants mourning videos? That's more striking because it's in the wild, rather than guided by some trainer...

This is such a delight! But if you look at some of the other videos of elephants painting, they are all producing the same view of an elephant, and the same kind of flower. At times, you can see a human hand or arm nudging the trunk. After each change of paintbrush, they are fed a treat. But even with these aids, what they can do is remarkable. There IS one video of an elephant painting which looks more real. You can see that his trunk is not being guided. He is sloshing paint onto an easel, missing the paper and painting the easel itself some of the time. The painting itself is a mix of many lines- in different colors chosen by his handler- the kind of painting children do when they are younger than two.

That's interesting. I haven't looked at the other videos - only the first one.

There's one clip about elephants finding elephant bones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1Q7nSNEpy8

And there's this longer piece where an elephant finds a dead elephant (not just bones): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU6LS8mKf3E

Pretty amazing animals...

When I saw that wonderful video of the elephant painting, I was so thrilled. I would love to believe it's really so, and really does happen.

I got worried when I looked at some of the other videos and saw different elephants painting almost the exact same thing- it began to seem as though there was a human intelligence somehow guiding the paintings, and making it happen that the elephant and flower paintings looked so similiar- no matter which elephant did the painting. Even if that's true, it's still amazing that they can do it- just a little bit less so.

What do you think? I may be totally off here.

Hi twinleaf,

I haven't watched more than the 1 of the elephant painting.

My friend commented, when I sent it to her, that you never saw the elephant actually painting...only the trunk. So that does seem a bit suspicious.

But I agree with you, that even to see the elephant holding the paintbrush, even if a human hand is guiding what is drawn - that is still amazing to me.

I find it really sad that someone would make a fake video of that. Like - WHYYYYYYY??? doh - isn't it amazing enough to see elephants painting? Why would they set it up like that?
Sometimes I sort of lose my faith in human beings.

~sigh~

If that was the elephant and not only another trunk then I've found this impressive and fascinating. I always thought that elephants are smart.
