my first garden

Posted by llurpsienoodle on April 7, 2008, at 21:04:11

I've never had a garden before, just some potted plants. Now I'm thinking about upgrading, since I haven't yet managed to kill the orchid or the palm inside.

There's a nice perennial bed in the sun and a raised bed. I'm thinking about planting herbs in sunny containers on the deck and tomatoes in the raised bed. also to tuck some herbs in around the perennials. I like herbs-- they make summer cooking so much more vibrant.

I was thinking about getting 3 dwarf tomato plants- one red and big, one yellow pear and one red cherry. Does this sound like a good salad yet?

mmm salad. (she says, after eating her 3rd serving of ice cream today)

Ice cream special today because I was feeling so down.

Li think I have some of your salad in my dreams but sounds like a lovely idea. Cherry tomatoes grow well in pots too. Is it tomato or tamato? Love Phillipa

Ice cream works for me too, I had some today.
I grow the same varieties of tomatoes as you are planing, and with basil, yum! I also do red and yellow peppers for roasted peppers on the grill! And I plant those burpless, seedless, cucumbers too!

Try to do a soil test to see if you need to add anything to the soil before you plant the tomato plants. And you can start early, which is fun. I place a milk carton with the bottom cut off over the tomato plant to create a greenhouse, and then when it is sunny, I take off the cap to let it breathe. I do this and have tomatoes almost 2 weeks before the neighbors. (its kinda a competitive neighborhood)
Also when I plant the tomato plant, I tear the bottom 2 stems off and plant it past those broke off stems, they will then create more roots and you will have a sturdier plant.

I know you didn't ask for any advice, you probably don't need any, but I just love to talk garden any time of the day! It is my passion.

Flower gardens are what I love!

Actually, I'd love to have a big veggie garden but I have lots of trees - so lots of shade!

I can hardly wait for flowers!

Cosmos, bachelor buttons, poppies, columbines, & LOTSSSSS of others.

:-) Kath

So far, I have planted Dahlias, Asiatic Lilies, Siberian Iris, nasturtium, sunflowers

and herbs (catnip, dill, oregano, basil, purple basil, borage, chives, parsley, thyme)

and tomatoes
sweet olive, yellow pear, black krim. I figure i can get the regular ol' red tomatoes at the farmer's market, right?

I have dug a border around the big bed, ripped out sod to make a new bed for my sunflowers, and tilled the raised tomato bed, adding fertilizer and wood ash, where needed. Soil is somewhat acid. but otherwise good dirt.

I'm even keeping a journal so that I know when to do what to the garden. next week I will buy patio containers for the rest of the herb seeds that I haven't planted yet. Apparently sage is a perennial, which means that it gets a special spot.

I'm also fertilizing the daffodils and hyacinth this year, so that next year their display will be equally bright.

thanks for tomato tips. I will definitely be using them. It's still a bit on the cool side though.

Hi llurpsie,

It sounds like you're going to have an amazing garden!!!!

You've done a lot of work already.

All I've done so far (although it was a lot of work) was RAKE up last fall's leaves. I also planted some crocus bulbs that I hadn't gotten around to planting last fall (except apparently I planted at least 4, as there are 4 pretty purple crocuses blooming).

I've also transplanted some snowdrops into various locations.

hugs to a fellow gardener! luv, Kath
