I wanna camp out under the stars

Posted by Quintal on May 3, 2008, at 1:04:55

Sometime this summer I want to camp out in the country. I've been wanting to do this for years, but have never gotten round to it. Bought the tent, camping stove, folding pans etc, but never used them, except once in the back garden to test it out. Got bitten by a spider and ended up in hospital though...

I never had the chance to do anything like this when I was younger, so I guess now is my time, before it's too late.

I have been thinking about camping out also, Q.

I used to camp alot when I had my main dog. He and I traveled and we just set up wherever we were in the late afternoon. I haven't done much of anything like that since he died.

I have another dog now that could go with me and I think I'll buy a small tent to use. There are dozens of parks here in central Texas and I am a fool to not camp out.

Let's keep one another posted on when and where we do this, okay?

Pat

Yeah, that's a great idea Pat. I already have all the gear, so it's just a case of waiting for a fine day. I used to take photos as a hobby and I'd like to capture the morning and evening light around the countryside here. I smashed my old camera a while ago, but I've been saving up for a new one. I'm going for a digital SLR this time. I don't intent to become a professional, so I don't really need one so advanced, but I'm thinking maybe of doing a photography course to get the most out of it. This is the one I've got my heart set on, but I'm not sure what package to go for: http://www.camerabox.co.uk/product1.asp?ProductID=3092&gclid=CKyprsrCiJMCFQ1rMAodkEpjYQ

This is where I'm thinking of camping:

"GX-10''s OPS system, located within the cameras body, enables you to obtain clear and shake-free pictures, even at slow shutter speeds or with a telephoto lens"

Sounds good to me. OPS system will very helpful. As I've "matured", I've noticed a bit of a shake now and then. It really annoys me when I see that the photograph isn't sharp. I think you're getting a good camera.

If you were nearby, maybe I could teach you something about photography. That is supposed to be my "art".....

The camping spot made me gasp! That is absolutely gorgeous. You've got it all there, hills, meadow, water and cattle. Reminds me of the Califronia coast north of San Francisco. Rock On!!!!

We'll have to compare experiences.

My first "mini" trip will be next weekend. Saturday is my birthday and my family and I are going to a delightful little cove in a lake up by Georgetown. An old homestead, lilacs, old fences, cement foundation lines....irises....all the things that tell you that something special happened there a long time ago.

What a beautiful place that would be to camp.

Is it just out in the country? I think you live in England? Not sure.

Can you just camp anywhere out in the country or do you have to get permission, or is that a camping area with specific 'sites'.

Yeah, that would be great. Shame I live on a different contient! Do you know how to use a histogram? I read a review of the camera I'm looking to buy, and it said it was not recommended for beginners because it tends to take 'cool' shots unless you keep an eye on the histogram. I'd be totally lost if I had to buy it and find I can't take a decent photograph without mastering the histogram (whatever that may be). It made me wonder if I might be better off getting a more user-friendly camera, but I'm certain I want a digital SLR, not one of those pocket things. Can you recommend any particularly user-friendly models?

Congrats on your birthday! Sorry it took me so long to respond - I've been causht up with other things. How did the trip go? The fine weather held, but I painted my doors and didn't want to leave them open while I was away. Maybe next weekend, if the weather's fine. I wish I had a camera. This week I spotted a farmer cutting his fields and it looked like a giant stripey lawn stretching into the horizon. Would have made a wonderful photograph :-(

Forgive my ignorance on American history, but I'm curious - what happened at Georgetown all those years ago?

I live in the country, and that place is just a mile or so from my house. I walk there most days with my dogs. It's great to be out in the fresh air - for so many years I just sat inside moping around. I feel much better for all the excercise and I never realized there were such beautiful places round here!

Yes, I live in England. I think it would be okay to camp out in one of those spots so long as you're respectful of the environment and don't leave any litter behind. The local fell is protected as an ancient monument - me and my dad have found a few Roman coins dating from the reign of Valentinian (I think), but you still see people camping on it during the summer.

Sorry I haven't stayed in this thread. When it is cloudy, it's all I can do to feed the animals.....I'm sorry company if no sun.

My biarthday bash was fantastic. My digital is wearing out and the photos don't do the meadows, spring, waterholes, flowers justice. It was a bit of heaven.

I would really like to camp there, but not sure if one can.

Am posting links to photos!
