My current interest are organic gardening for one. I planted my first organic garden this summer. I planted tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, watermelon, swiss chard, red and yellow bell peppers, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry and most all the herbs. It was really an adventure. I was flying by the seat of my pants I guess. I got lots of food from them, but over time a lot of the plants became overrun with diseases. I was trying to find out what they were and how to treat them, and it just seems like it was too late. A lot of them are dying. So pretty soon I'm going to plant my Fall garden, and I'm going to try to stay on top of diseases, spraying preventatively and composting more.
Another interest is cooking and food preparation. I say food preparation because I eat a lot of raw food, so you can't really use the word "cooking" for that. But I love both cooking and raw food prep. I am a vegetarian (eating fish occassionally). I guess you could call me a flexitarian. My husband is not a vegetarian, but he has some dietary restrictions. So I'm always looking for recipes for him, others for me, and some that will please us both. I was trying to remember what books I've read this year, and I realized I've only read cookbooks and culinary interests books. I only recently became interested in food preparation. Now I love it with a vengeance.
I have an interest I'm not too proud of, too. For over a year I went without watching television, and it was great for me. I didn't see all those horrible violent images on tv show and on the news, but I recently went back to television. I don't know why. So I starting seeing news about the missing girl named Caylee Anthony. Now I can't get enough of the story. I hope with all my heart that the child is okay. The family is so screwed up that I find it fascinating. I just want to know more about them. The show that covers the story the most is Nancy Grace who is a horrible, horrible person in my opinion. She is snide and rude and slanderous. But I find myself watching her show all the time!! I come from an extremely troubled family background myself that includes murder by a parent, incest, neglect and emotional abuse. So I think in trying to figure out the Anthony family, I'm seeking more insight into mine. I've spoken to my therapist about it, and he seems to think that's what's going on.
I'd love to hear about your interests, too.

Hi Cass welcome back.
Your garden sounds wonderful. I hope you're able to find some non-toxic ways of preventing disease in your garden.
Just a quick answer - I love to read; I make pottery; I love my pets - cat & lizard.
I am an 'lacto-vegetarian'.

Hi Kath,
I love my animals, too. I have a dog and a cat. My dog is about 12 years old. Most of the time, she frisky and playful like a pup, but it seems like every couple months she's been getting sick with a gastrointestinal thing. She just got over one. Today she's back to her old self again. She part australian shepherd, part black lab. She's extremely devoted, affectionate, sweet and loving. I love her so, so much. Our cat is great, too. He's like a buddha. Nothing phases him. Like many cats, he's more on the aloof side.

Hi Cass.
Interests... Hmmm... I probably spend too much time on the internet. :)
Work or trying to work takes up a lot of my energy.
I enjoy spending time with my son. Lately we've been watching "The Young Indiana Jones". You have to admire a series that has him enjoying the educational special features, at least some of the time. They also show an amazing amount of moral complexity in some of the episodes, and we get to tease apart the strands of that.
I've currently got four dogs. There's my constant companion and darling baby. My enormously obese sweetie with the unflappable personality that seems to steady the others. My sweet and gentle and dainty, yet lively working dog who has a strong dense streak when it comes to figuring out that words have a postural meaning (sit, down) even while she understands seemingly without my even training her that words have a relational meaning (stay, come, pupperoni, outside, leash), and who loves to nip at my clothes. And Daddy's Little Princess, who has some pretty serious problems, but who has kept her good spirits and good nature and winds her way to her mommy and beloved daddy (although it takes her a few tries to figure out they aren't five steps to the left). My husband has never had a dog who chose him before. He's so besotted that he (a clean freak by nature) overlooks the fact that she sometimes isn't as pleasing to the nose as we might wish, and always remembers to tuck her into her proper place between us at night.
I read all the time, although not so much lately I must confess. I like mystery novels and historical novels, and nonfiction about psychology, or theology, or various and sundry passing fancies. I'm currently laughing my head off at "Tell Me Where It Hurts: A Day of Humor, Healing and Hope in My Life as an Animal Surgeon". Admittedly that's a audiobook. I discovered them a few years ago, and now I enjoy getting stuck in traffic. I recently finished "Write it When I'm Gone ", and am sorry I didn't get to know more about Gerald Ford than the casual exposure through Chevy Chase on Saturday Night Live.
I love TV. I'd never even want to try to live without it. I consider it more an active hobby than a passive experience. I have pretty much quit watching the networks. I have no taste for reality TV. Other than local news, I rarely get my news from TV. I tend to either ignore it or immerse myself in it. But Tivo lets me watch what I want when I want to. Looove Tivo.
I'm just starting cooking again. I've done it since I was ten at my parent's house. But my parents *liked* what I cooked. My husband and I don't really share the same tastes in food. And my son hates everything that isn't standard kid food. So I'd fallen into the habit of just rotating a few easy to put together meals. I've been surprised that it doesn't take that much longer to put together a reasonably healthy meal than it does to go through a drivethru or warm up junk. The time goes in on the preparation side. I have to know what I plan to cook, and arrange the buying of ingredients, etc. I'm currently looking at a way to make that part of my life so we can eat healthier. Not traditionally perhaps, but healthier. Since my son is so picky, I have to sneak those vitamins into him. Apples instead of peas. If he won't eat broccoli, we have cantaloupe instead. That sort of thing. Our meals must look silly.

Hi Cass,
When my cat had diarrhea one time the vet recommended acidophilus (as in yogurt). Just a teeny bit. I wonder if it would be good for a dog?

obsidian,
That's all fun stuff. I have a friend who's an art therapist. Getting her degree and training was pretty rigorous, but she's done, and I think she's enjoying her work.

Hi llurp,
Lol. These aren't *funny* brownies. You'll only get a sugar high. I'm going to post the recipe in another thread. You'll love'em. They're the best, IMHO.
