They are super-cute, but I don't know about them being almost extinct.
They are a semi-common research animal, especially in endocrine functioning. I've worked in 2 labs that used them as a model organism.The white/pink ones are albinos :)

My first thought was they remind me of Hello Kitty (which I love). But as some of the people on the page commented, they look more like Pokeman characters. Too cute!

They do like a Hello Kitty character.
