Instead of being immediately hustled out, he was asked by a clerk, "Are you here to bid?"
He showed his driver's license and was given a paddle, no questions asked. Then, as his incredulous roommate looked on, DeChristopher started bidding. "It was just raise my arm as often as possible, Bidder No. 70," he told a reporter, "I was trying to make it obvious I was there to disrupt the auction."
But before you could say, "Going, going, gone," DeChristopher had "bought" 13 lease parcels - around 22,500 acres - for some $1.7 million and, according to BLM officials, driven up other bids by about half a million dollars. At that point, people started to complain and he was taken away by BLM security. Among his competitors: Kerr-McGee, a subsidiary of Anadarko Petroleum, the country's second biggest independent oil producer."
Sigismund, Texas Chic, Rose, in my traveling years, my dog Tippy and I spent time covering most of Utah. I was either photographing a rodeo or we were on our way to another state for one.
Utah is the most beautiful state for me because I like the rugged, rocky landscape. I was headed for Green River one day and I exclaimed to Tippy that this is "like driving through a landscape painting". Tippy nodded. :-) I saw a sunrise west of Green River that will never be outdone, in my heart.
Robert Redford is behind the push to save the beautiful national areas (our lands) and this young man is out front! I am so proud that a "youngster" would step up and do what others din't have the ***** to do. The BLM is made up of people who aren't used to someone throwing a monkey wrench in their plans! YEA, Tim DeChristopher!

Fayroe I've never traveled this part of the US actually been out of the country more and traveled east coast did get to San Francisco once. Didn't know Utah looke like this thanks Phillipa

I sent $10 to this young man about three weeks ago! It is exciting to know that there is such a connection between people concerning a college activist who had the fortitude to stand up against corporate monsters and we are helping it happen!!! We fought the BLM in New Mexico, over river rafting and kayakers, in our small community and they are a nasty foe. We called them the Bureau of Livestock and Mining. If you can't kill it with cattle, then mine it to death....in this case, drill, baby, drill. xoxoxo pat
p.s. the places that I've been in Utah, NM, Colorado, Wyoming,Nevada, the Idahos and Montana are so breathtakingly beautiful. I long to return. Your action has me hoping that our grandchildren will still own parts of heaven. It's too obvious to state, but anyway.......I am (even now!) surprised that (people professing to be) Christians, who attend their church services which emphasise the glory and wonder of Creation and God should see fit to auction it off for oil (of all things).

I've only just read the article.
I was just blown away by the photo and thought you might like it.
That bit about 'to stop it from changing' was to stop the picture from changing on the Truthout website.
But what a bloke hey?
To go into an auction and buy more than a million dollars worth of land in protest!So that no one feels put down, let me tell you a sad story about where I live.
Until WWI this area was rainforest, a big patch of forest called the Big Scrub.
Until then there had only been cedar getters to change it for the most part.
After WWI the government divided it up into small blocks which were allocated to the returned soldiers, provided each block was cleared within 2 years.
So they stood on platforms up in the forest in the rain with crosscut saws and sawed the whole priceless forest down and burned it on the ground, except for what timber they had use for in their buildings, fence posts and later banana boxes.
Then it became dairy country.
After the closure of most of that industry it is still used for some beef cattle.
Now houses are being built on it.
It's heartbreaking really.

It's simply unbelievably upsetting & shocking. I would think people all over the WORLD would be up in arms. I mean, how can you look at that photo & even imagine that it would EVER be allowed to be anything other than simple wilderness!!!

Seeing all the Bryce National Park photos makes me think I would like to see the US.
I like geology, plants and animals, probably in that order, with humans coming a long way last, and our modern western way of life somewhere off the scale down the bottom end.
I mean that's in general or something.
I don't hate everyone in particular.
I try to be nice, even if I don't succeed.
Lots of people are wonderful.
I have never understood why I feel the way I do around them.Maybe I should change the subject and mention this movie I saw, if only because a little of it is set in Murmansk in 1939.
Like a lot of American movies the cinema photography was (in this case absolutely) excellent, and unusually, the script was OK.
