Deneb, how is volunteering?

Posted by Dinah on July 9, 2009, at 9:25:20

I'm about to step outside my comfort zone and volunteer for something IRL.

Either that or decide to be a total hermit and occupy myself with my dogs and my books. :)

Any advice for me, from your volunteering experience?

Dinah seriously volunteering is admirable that is how I got into nursing through volunteering but didn't work. With a family and working where will you find the time? Phillipa

Hey Dinah

Today was my first day of volunteering. I'm working in the beer tent. It is hard work! It's insanely busy during the hours I work. Everyone wants a beer. It is non stop running around getting beer for people. I must have burned a lot of calories. I am dead tired after 4 hours of non stop craziness.

I did my very best, but my supervisor wasn't very reinforcing. He said I would improve more as I worked more. Improve more?? I was doing the best I could. I thought I did an excellent job. Geez, what do they expect? Keep in mind I am not getting paid and it was my first time working in a beer tent. I was able to serve hundreds of people. I think I did a pretty darn good job. I didn't spill any beer either! At one point the supervisor decided to close down the second cash, but then it got really busy again so the customers were being served really slowly. Some people said they weren't going to leave us any tip because we were so slow. We don't get to keep any of the tip, it all goes to charity. Geez, some people are so cranky.

Tomorrow I am just going to Bluesfest to have fun. I don't volunteer tomorrow, but I get to see concerts for free.

All in all, it wasn't too bad. It is hard work, but still kind of fun in a way. I just wish people would remember that we are volunteers and be more grateful.
