How to make friends

Posted by gibbons482 on September 20, 2009, at 20:57:33

Right now I feel left behind. My friends have all graduated college and are married with kids and I'm still struggling through it with bipolar disorder. Part of it is that I want what they have. I had a fiancee who died last year in an accident. My CBT therapist wants me to join clubs and make friends. The kids are so much younger than I am. And I don't know how to make friends. I'm socially awkward and ADD. Inevitably, I scare them off. So how do I make friends knowing I won't know how stable I'll be in a week or even a month? What is friendship anyway? The friends I have are all friends from high school.

I feel like I don't even fit in here--even on the internet.

the best way to make friends... and it sounds too simple, but just be yourself. we all have are quirky ways but that is what makes us interesting and likable. the more you can relax, and realize that everyone is insecure in their own way, the easier it is. Age become much less important and I wouldn't let that bother you, I am friends with people of many ages.
The best way to meet people is to join groups, to be open to meeting people and letting them in, to be relaxed and smile, and to not care and worry about what they are thinking.

you are you and you should want to be accepted as you.

get out there and join some groups and make some new friends! :)

I feel the same way. I'm 27 now and I am still struggling to get my degree. All the friends I have are from high school too and yes they all have good jobs and are married or planning to marry and are pregnant or am planning to be pregnant soon. They have houses and stuff, basically a normal life.

Meanwhile I am still living with my parents and still depend on them.

But we shouldn't compare ourselves to others.

yeah, I sort of know what you mean in some ways...a lot of my friends have married, had children- these things haven't been priorities for me, managing my life and moods has been. Some friends from high school are fine though aren't they? I've got a couple, they are people I wanted to keep knowing.
I sort of like continuing education classes, a little bit of a commitment, but not huge, usually not too expensive, at local high schools, community colleges, etc. and they're not all kids. At least you'd find some people with similar interests and a reason maybe to interact?
Fitting in sucks anyway, it's over-rated to be sure.
good luck,
sid
