Tom Waits was giving a concert here and some people were sniffing a bottle of amyl nitrate from a whiskey bottle half full of the stuff (why? That's a lot of amyl nitrate!). Tom asks the audience if any of them have a drink. One of them (not realising what's in the bottle) says sure and offers him the bottle. He comes down, takes it, brings it close to his face, and says something and then declines it. It must have been a shock.
