Such an excellent series on the subject, all encompassing. I remember being glued to the telly in the 1970's when it was first aired.

I watch a lot of it; I will probably follow the link you provided and watch this programme again. Thanks so much, Manic.

Hi manic, I have been at the Sydney Writers festival on a diet of global financial crisis, ecological disaster and the managerial nadir, so as you can imagine it is a pleasant surprise to hear from you. It has also been goode to listen to so many American authors like Lionel Shriver (health system), Michael Otterman (torture) and lots of ones I cant remember. But the standout wonderful American, an absolute gem, the best theatre of my lifetime, was Michael Daisy doing his monologue entitled 'The Last Cargo Cult'. When you enter the theatre everyone id handed (real) money in amounts from $5 to $100, which is the takings of the show returned to the audience unequally, representing the role of luck in life and more besides I would guess. It is a measure of the strength of the performance that everyone hands the money back at the end, or so I felt they did. He was literally breathtaking and I would urge people to keep an eye out for him.

And I shall watch the Stalingrad film when I get home.

I don't think much of English language films, but I saw a really good film I would recommend if you like thinking about the political options open to Austria-Hungary in 1913. It is a wonderful film...
"Colonel Redl".

I also want to see "The White Ribbon".

Fascinating, isn't it manic, to see the master race fall into the trap of the subhumans. I read a lot of books on the period listening to Beethoven's second symphony, though the feel there is more from the French Revolution and more like WWI than WWII. Goering makes jokes about the 2 million Russians who starved to death in German captivity: 'After having eaten everything possible, including the soles of their boots, they have begun to eat each other and, what is more serious, have eaten a German sentry.'

What they didn't expect was the spirit of the Russians, one of whom ended a report, talking about the fighting in the grain elevators of Stalingrad:
'Again we heard the omininous sound of tanks. From behind a neighbouring block stocky German tanks began to crawl out. This clearly was the end. The guardsmen said goodbye to one another. With a dagger my orderly scratched on a brick wall: "Rodimtsev's guardsmen fought and died for their country here"....'

I haven't watched the 5 just now, but when it came out I did, and more recently there was a German film about Stalingrad. It's all very grim and gothic, what with the reduction of the pocket, some officers trying to get out at any price, and people hanging off the wings and wheels and dropping off at 2,000 ft. I think I remember that the population of Stalingrad was forbidden to leave. I don't know how many that would have been. Could it have been 300,000?
