So..here's the situation: I'm stable, I moved, I'm almost an official resident of my new state, and I'm looking for a job. I want to go back to school, and since I'm 26 now, I figured this coming fall, when I'll be 27, would be a good time to start.
My parents said they'll support me either way, but they think I should wait 1 more year, work and be stable, and then go back to school.
I just don't know. I think that school, especially if I did an online program (there are a number of state schools here that offer online programs), would help keep me occupied and I'd be making progress towards a goal. I'd have to borrow whether I go to school this year or next year (either way, I qualify for a Pell grant), and I've kind of been wanting to go back to school for a while now, so...I just don't know.
What would you do?

Could you go to school part-time this semester? Maybe one would course to satisfy your urge to learn and would allow you to further increase your sense of stability.
Most online schools seem to pressure folks into buying a package and doing the entire load. I don't know if the programs you're looking at do that.
Btw, that you are taking in the observations of those close to you speaks well of your progress, IMO.
Next semester, all going well, you could
adjust your coursework accordingly.Good luck :)

I was going to ask about the part time possibility too. Do you have to do work and school? Would you go away to school or stay at home?
I guess they are worried about you relapsing. Are you concerned too?

I don't want to be obstinate and ignore what people who know me are saying, but other people who know me have said that they think going back to school will keep me from getting bored and give me a sense of accomplishment, as I see things slowly build towards a degree.
The online program I'm looking at is a non-profit school that was set up specifically to offer education at relatively low tuition rates through the internet. If I choose to start (I have to study for and pass a COMP TIA A+ before I can start, so that's gonna be a while), I have to complete at least 12units per 6 month term, which sounds like a lot, but I mean...12 credits over a full 6 months (no spring/fall/summer breaks or anything) seems pretty reasonable.
I don't want to make the mistake of getting a job, throwing myself into school, and finding that I'm not able to balance it all. At the same time, it'd be nice to do something productive with my time.
One of my friends said to take 1-2 classes for a semester then see how it goes. I just don't know...

Well the 1-2 classes thing sounds like a good trial?

Or not working? Maybe your parents want to give that support to you, at least while you get settled again? Just a thought. (Some parents want to help. Good thing?)

For medical I did the prerequisites first as was required before the RN portion. But was in real life school. That served the purpose of getting me out, being in a classroom with others for support, and socialization. Is that what you have to do first also? Preliminary courses as two was a lot after being out of school for years. Phillipa

There aren't any programs locally for what I want to do. There's a "Pre-Health Information Management," but it doesn't qualify you to sit for any exams (an associate's program qualifies you to sit for the RHIT); its just a bunch of electives. I guess they think you'll pick up the actual health informatics part in a 4-year school? I dunno...
Anyway, scheduling would also be an issue. Now that I've gotten my arrest record expunged (awesome!), I'm looking for a job--any job. The internet classes appeal to me b/c I could master the new material at my own pace and I wouldn't have to worry about scheduling conflicts.
