SAMe...I would also suggest reviewing previous threads in archived months. Lots more info there than could be repeated here. One of the best sources is the package insert in the box. It explains SAMe in layman terms. You could also do a search of SAMe and that will open up a lot of doors.
A quick review is that it is a natural substance created by the body, not available in food, and is important in many bodily functions. Especially brain, joints, and liver. Supplementing extra amounts of SAMe has been shown helpful for depression in European clinical studies. It is pricey, about $1 a pill, with a max dose of 8 pills/day. Healthfood stores are very expensive, but you can get a box of Nature Made brand at Wal*Mart for $20. It's safe and worth a try to 1) speed the onset of an AD, 2) allow a lower dose of an AD, 3) replace the AD altogether. Consult with the doc first.
It is so new in the USA though that there isn't much of a track record yet. Some doctors are starting to suggest it with selected patients and getting surprisingly unexpected good results. Personally I have found it helpful, but the high cost makes it off limits. And like anything else, we're all different. It may help and it may not. Only a personal trial will tell.
