SSRIs & Side Effects in a Diabetic

Posted by Leslie on January 31, 2000, at 23:13:43

Hi,

I'm a 46-year-old woman with Type I diabetes. I have a 30-year history of dysthymia and depressive episodes. I am also a court reporter. I realize that the diabetes and my job take their toll on my wrists/hands (to say nothing of my psyche!)

I was on Zoloft for three years. It worked great, but after two hand surgeries for trigger finger releases, I noticed that when I accidently skipped a day or two of Zoloft, my hand stiffness and achiness improved dramatically. My psychiatrist took me off the Zoloft, explaining that SSRIs cause edema in some people. Hands immediately felt much better. Since that time, we've tried Celexa, Paxil, Prozac, which all caused flareups of trigger fingers and even night-time carpal tunnel symptoms (which I never have otherwise). We tried Effexor and Wellbutrin, which gave me an almost amphetamine-like feeling. I took Serzone, which made me feel "weird." We are currently beginning a trial of BuSpar, to at least treat the anxiety component of the depression.

The SSRIs "work" very well psychologically -- but I cannot tolerate the side effects. Is there anything I can do? Thanks.
