In reply to Weekly Prozac?, posted by Marie1 on February 28, 2001, at 7:47:37
Marie - I heard throught the grapevine that the weekly Prozac release date may be held up because of some concerns about heart problems (eg QT interval). I was talking with a couple of the doctors about this a week or two ago, but haven't seen the news release myself. Personally, I don't think that I could remember to take a drug once a day rather than once a week.
In a recent study of regular (daily) vs weekly Prozac, after 25 weeks of continuation therapy 37% of weekly Prozac users relapsed, whereas only 26% of daily Prozac users did (and this was in the confines of a clinical trial, where patients are more likely to be followed up, to maintain compliance).
For start-up side effects, "diarrhea" and "back pain" were seen more often in the weekly Prozac group. As for continuing side effects "thinking abnormally" and "nervousness" were more common with the weekly Prozac.
Hope this helps - Cam
