In reply to Excessive Sweating and SSRIs, posted by chiaratara on June 30, 2001, at 2:18:10
Sweating is a relatively common side effect seen with SSRIs (e.g., Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox, Celexa), reported in 7% to 11% of patients; 12% of patients treated with Effexor. Exact cause of antidepressant-induced sweating is unknown. Other conditions should be ruled out as the cause of excessive sweating such as infection, malignancy, and hormone disturbances.
One drug suggested that may alleviate excessive sweating from SSRIs or Effexor is benztropine (Cogentin), an anticholinergic agent. Other drugs that may alleviate antidepressant-induced sweating include clonidine (Catapres), an alpha2-adrenergic agonist, and atenolol (Tenormin), a beta-adrenergic blocker. Paxil possesses anticholinergic property, although this tends to occur at higher doses. So use caution when using Cogentin.
Incidentally, the use of a cholinergic agent, as suggested by the previous poster, such as bethanechol or Urecholine may worsen sweating.
It should be noted that approximately 80% of menopausal women experience excessive sweating, along with the usual "hot flashes."
