Else: modafinil (Alertec-Canada; Provigil-U.S.)?

Posted by Buster on August 3, 2001, at 19:26:10

Hi Else,

I have been reading your posts and I was wondering if you have considered a trial of modafinil. Modafinil is available in Canada for the treatment of narcolepsy under the brand name of Alertec. Here are two URLs with information about this med:

http://www.pslgroup.com/dg/ea092.htm

http://www.provigil.com/

In the U.S., modafinil is a Schedule IV drug and is much easier to prescribe than Schedule II psychostimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall. Your doctor may be willing to give you a trial of modafinil whereas s/he might not even consider a trial of one of the psychostimulants.

Modafinil has also been used successfully (off-label) to reduce the fatigue associated with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.

There is a study (in Medline) that suggests that modafinil may be effective in the treatment of adult ADHD:

J Child Adolesc Psychopharmacol 2000 Winter;10(4):311-20

Efficacy of modafinil compared to dextroamphetamine for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults.
