For me, Elizabeth, adrafinil (Olmifon) is a weak stimulant on my physical system, but mentally & emotionally, it's a stronger stimulant than Dexedrine or Ritalin. I can't speak for modafinil (Provigil) but only adrafinil. Still, it's more effective in keeping me awake than Dexedrine. I can fall asleep even when I'm on Dexedrine. I've taken my dose & ended giving up & crawling into bed & sleeping through it all. On adrafinil, I have no need to go to bed & sleep during the day, though I probably could. I've just never needed to. Provigil IS expensive which is why I use Olmifon - much, much cheaper.
> It's a weak stimulant and lacks the cardiovascular side effects of amphetamine and related drugs. Doctors have been prescribing it for depression, daytime sleepiness, ADD, etc. It seems to help a lot of people. It's very long-acting so you only need to take it once a day. Its main disadvantage seems to be its cost (which is a lot).
