Is lamotrigine a hardcore mood stabilizer??

I get the feeling that lamotrigine is not the best choice if you have hardcore bipolar disorder.
Has anyone had hardcore bipolar (ie not soft bipolar stuff), and done well on lamotrigine as a sole mood stabilizer?
