Bitter Orange as a lypolytic?

Posted by Ame Sans Vie on January 21, 2004, at 17:01:16

The only thing I hate about this Prozac is that, regardless of the 60mg Adderall, it makes me want to eat like a horse, lol. Until I heard about the ban, I was considering trying an ephedra-based product, under my doctor's supervision though -- the things you hear about that stuff is rather frightening. I'm glad I don't have to go that route. Unfortunately, due to my tolerance to the anorexic effects of stimulants, there isn't a prescription drug I can try. And I refuse to try that one non-stimulant diet drug... Xenical (orlistat), is it? Whatever it is, I know it works by blocking the absorption of fat... my personal opinion is that the majority of people who lose weight on a low-fat diet end up looking gaunt and aged beyond their years. I've been a low-carb fan for quite some time -- I'm so glad it's finally getting taken seriously!!! But I digress...

Bitter orange (as can be found here: http://www.liquafit.com/articles/From%20Bitter%20Fruit%20a%20Sweet%20Weight.pdf) is said to contain several adrenergically active agents (primarily synephrine, tyramine, N-methyl-tyramine; also hordenine and octopamine, which I'm not familiar with). This essay describes bitter orange as having a primary effect on beta-3 adrenergic receptors (unlike ephedra, which targets beta-1, beta-2, beta-3, alpha-1, and alpha-2... essentially wreaking havoc). This beta-3 action is noted to be responsible for induction of lypolysis (fat-burning) and thermogenesis (increased resting metabolic rate). Now I'm familiar with synephrine, from the nasal sprays and all, but I would really like to know if anyone has any experience with this stuff? Is it mentally and/or physically stimulating? I've never found synephrine on it's own to be stimulating, but I'm not sure of the dose discrepancies. Stimulation/mood-uplift is not something I'm really after... the Adderall takes care of that for me.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Michael
