I am on low-dose Elavil (10-20mg per day) and in the past two months, while taking D-Phenylalanine (DPA), I have been having episodes of tachycardia (racing heart).
The DPA eliminates 70% of my chronic pain from inflammatory arthritis. But, I seem to have developed tachycardia and severe constipation on it.
Since I stopped the DPA, the tachy has decreased, but I am still having it. Its been 6 days since I stopped the DPA. The constipation has gone away.
My Pdoc and I thought it was the Elavil causing the tachy, but I had been on Remeron 45mg for 2 years without ever having racing heart, so I don't see how I could possibly get that with 15-20mg of Elavil. So I removed the DPA instead because the tachy correlated with when I started DPA last December.
Last summer I was on DLPA for about two months and also got great pain relief, but a lot of anxiety. This tachycardia I have now doesnt feel like anxiety, just a racing heart.
I have spent hours researching the difference between DPA and DLPA and there is so much conflicting information. Some of what I read indicates that DPA --> PEA, which has a stimulant-effect, so I thought that must be the culprit here.
On the DLPA I was wired/anxious and my daily headaches were really bad.
I had excellent headache relief on Remeron and some on Elavil, so I am just very confused by my body's reactions.
My basic question is trying to figure out how tachycardia could be related to the "d" version of phenylalanine. I want the pain relief this brought me. There has to be some reaction between Elavil and DPA going on here.
I will post other questions in a different posts.
Any ideas appreciated!
