Remedies for menstrual cramps?

Does anyone know of any good remedies, alternative or otherwise, for severe menstrual cramps? I don't get cramps often, but when I do, they are terrible. Any suggestions? My Mom used to drink a bit of blackberry brandy when she had cramps, and it worked for her. Unfortunately, I don't have any brandy in the house!
