> My doctor prescribed Effexor XR 225mg to my 12 years old kid. Has anyone had similar experience on this? Is this safe? Any good/bad results? Any comments would be appreciated.
I am surprised that the doctor would prescribe that high a dose to start with. I started at 75mg (by mistake - the doctor prescribed 37.5 but the pharmacist dispensed 75) and I had a very difficult time adjusting for the first week or so. This is not a pleasant medication and has side effects, and I would think that such a high dose would not be a good place to start. Wyeth, the manufacturer, recommends starting at 37.5 and gradually increasing the dosage over time. Check out www.effexorxr.com for the company line.
Also, when I Googled just now to find the website, I saw an article called "Wyeth: Effexor Unsuitable For Depressed Children" in which the company suggests that Effexor is not good for kids. Check it out at www.yourlawyer.com/practice/news.htm?story_id=6600&topic=Effexor
You may want to have another discussion with your doctor.
