I'm honored Sabrina that you consider me an expert. Perhaps Larry can give you the physiology of this condition, all of my knowledge is first hand, so to speak. I do know the technical, medical name... boner. Your son may have had a stimulating dream, had thoughts that excited him or simply had his penis rub against somthing or was touching it. Since it is lingering, my guess is that he needs to go to the bathroom. A full bladder presses on veins or something which causes it to harden. Even 50 year olds have been known to wake up with, as you so eloquently put it, a woody. There is a serious side effect to consider, your aim is highly impaired. But seriously, if after going to the bathroom it persists for over say 30 minutes you do have to be concerned about priapism a real problem, but I would think this is rare at his age. The psychological aspect is important. Its natural for dad to be proud (and mom too). Its probably best not to make a big deal out of it, like give him a little flag for Christmas or something, just tell him if he leaves it alone it will go away. Don't do what I do when I wake up with one, shake my wife out of slumber and proudly say, "Hey Honey, look what I found."
