There was a program on TV the other night about resilience.
Many of the people in the forum had been through horrible events, including a video link with a parent and child from the Columbine thing, and a man who saw his wife and two very young daughters shot in a similar event here. After some discussion as to how you survive such things, a consensus emerged among the 50 or so participants.
They preferred not to think in terms of resilience.
Many said that at certain points in their journey through this they did not feel or look resilient at all.
The preferred way of looking at it was that it was a journey through unknown territory through which they had to find their own way.I thought this (at least) was applicable to the situation many find themselves in here.
When I hear people say that their lives are appalling (either by comparison to the majority or not) I want to say 'You are on a dangerous journey and you have to find your own way. But it can be done, and the fact that you find yourself in this situation is no reflection on the essential you, nor does it mean that you have to be stuck like this for life'.
