I've just read this very quickly, but it makes sense. Depression is a real disease. (duh!) The good news is that other research seems to indicate that mindfulness, good nutrition, and vigorous exercise can produce positive changes in the brain -- and in particular the cingulate cortex. I'm drawing on a summary from the book "Buddha's Brian: the Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love & Wisdom" by Rick Hanson & Richard Mendius, but they cite all the studies.
