Welcome to Babble! I'm an alcoholic too and I detoxed myself at home. I'd say it was all done in about 4 weeks, and I was plenty miserable. The main danger in a do-it-yourself detox is seizures. It is best if you aren't alone during the process (although I was and did not suffer any seizures). I had a 20-year old habit. And believe it or not, my liver function is good. We have a board here called Substance where you'll find other people like us. It isn't so surprising to find that depression and alcoholism are often found together in people.
