new to depression and medication

Posted by Bamboomz on November 21, 2004, at 21:01:59

Hi..I had a baby 15 months ago and am now having some pretty serious problems with depression. I saw a naturopath who put me on a high protein, no sugar or caffeine diet but that does not seem to be helping. I am waiting to get a professional psychiatric evaluation (in January) and am also waiting to go into therapy. A few days ago my doctor threw some anti-depressant medication at me (effexor xr) without really listening to my symptoms. I just took the first pill in the packet today (37.5 mg) and I feel awful. Migraine headache, nausea, groggy. I am really afraid to take anti-depressent meds but I just don't know what to do anymore. I am so fed up with feeling miserable, slow and tired all the time. On top of it all, I have to hide the fact that I am taking these pills from my boyfriend who feels that diet and exercise will take care of my horrible moods. I just want to know more about depression. How serious is serious and does effexor really help? Are the side effects terrible? Is the pill going to make me into an unemotional zombie? If anyone wants to offer some support and information it would greatly appreciated.
