Hi Louise, hope you're still around. I recognize that this is a pretty old thread, but I'm totally new here, +plus this is one subject I can totally identify with.
I first realized I had an ETOH problem at age 39 when a doctor refused to treat my recurrent pnumonia until I could prove I'd been to 3 AA meetings. ("Tough Love" it's called)
For 12 1/2 years that worked: (more or less..) I got over most of the respiratory aliments, including TB. And after the death of a family member, I thought I could handle 1 leetle shot of brandy in a cup of coffee. Right. Three years, two heart attacks, cancer of mouth, throat, stomach, duosomething, and colon, and end-stage emphasemia later ... I managed to sober up again... barely able to walk 10 feet because of damage to my heart and lungs. This time the damage is permanant.
I hope you don't have to go through anything like that.
