Yeah, I love Rosie, and I'm not even gay. Or never had anyone try to convince me hard enough... (?)
This is my second post to you today... Hi.
Did you see the Nickelodeon special on Tuesday night at 9:00? Rosie was on it. It was a Linda Ellerbee news program (my daughter loves Linda Ellerbee, she writes these "Girl Reporter" books that have really strong&smart-girl-power kinds of messages).
Anyway, it was about gay families and tolerance, had a load of people sitting on a soundstage while Ellerbee conducts a group discussion. So Rosie's sitting there, with a whole mix of kids and teenagers. There were kids who had gay parents, christian kids who said "Homosexuality is wrong, the Bible says so..." A Muslim girl with the chador on her head, who said she thought gay families were just fine with her! Rosie was sitting next to the most obnoxious (Christian) kid, who said, basically, that homosexuality was an abomination,and that gays who parented children were sinners. My daughter kept saying: "Oh my god, I'm so surprised Rosie isn't punching this guy out..."
There also were adults: a gay principal, a gay fiirefighter from NYC (worked at World Trade Ctr), and they were very positive. Jerry Fallwell was also interviewed in a few clips. Ellerbee also discussed gay kids, and their being taunted on the schoolyards and in the communities where they live. She asked the kids who thought gay parenting was wrong if they'd go to the gay parents' houses, and hang out with the kids who were sitting there in the group. Their answers were surprising.
What a great show! If you saw it, sorry for going on about it. Evidently, more than 100,000 persons of the religious right persuasion wrote to Nickelodeon to implore that Nick cancel the program. So it was a wonderful thing, really, that this kids' network just stood its ground and kept it on. I think a lot of kids may have got a really good message from the show... No commercials, either, because no companies (in this day and age?) wanted to sponsor the program, or so I read in a news item...
