want to know more about obsession/erratic behavior

Posted by zalle on August 20, 2003, at 3:20:54

i'm writing this in the hope that someone may be able to give me some advice or help on the topic. one of my friends who i have known for 7 years seems to be completely obsessed with a male that she was once aquainted with. when we first met i actually thought and believed that this male was her partner but as time passed i realised that she hardly knew him. she also did strange things ...eg send herself a birthday card saying it was a man that had met her at a bustop when she was 16....i am certain that she had sent this card to herself because the handwriting was hers and also she wasn't scared at the idea of having a stalker....it was all really strange)
anyway despite the fact we were extremely close i realised that i didn't trust her and our friendship grew apart. i am now in touch with her again and i'm scared that her obsession she had 7 years ago with the guy is still going....its just that there are many coincedences... like she works at the uni which he teaches...she learns french which he speaks...she even moved to the suburb where he lives.. she also asks me about his friends all the time ...
i worry about her because i know that she had an extremely abusive childhood which she never really has dealt with...i've tried talking to her but she really is unapproachable...another mutual friend says her obsession is about status insecurity because this guy is highly academic. i'm not sure.
i wonder whether the friendship is worth rebuilding because i feel i can't trust her.....
does anyone know anything about this kind of obsession? what are the causes? ways to approach dealing with it?
