Hi Noa,
I guess there are 3 responses to trauma- fight, flight or freeze, and if the threat sequence isn't completed then a person becomes symptomatic. I hit all the symptoms myself- anxiety, dissociation, disorientation, fear, hypervigilance, physical pain, easily triggered, etc. When a bird hits a window, it freezes and then gradually it's whole body starts to shake and in essence it discharges arousal and returns to normal. If we are in a car accident and we don't complete the discharge (because the survival energy is so intense it's frightening and also we're uncomfortable with surrendering our conscious control to involuntary sensations) then we develop PTSD. My therp's intent is to complete the discharge of the auto trauma (the many auto traumas), and in doing so I learn how to handle other traumas. The positive is I don't have to relive any events, we focus on a physical feeling (like pain in my back) and work to resolve it. That's as far as I have gotten, it's all very relaxing (as opposed to the trauma work I have done before). I'll keep you updated.
take care, judy
