I can see how you'd feel strange about this, but I think it's fairly typical. I had a therapist/pdoc several years ago who offered to do this for me (keep my medications) and indicated that he had done that for a number of patients.
Like tabitha, I'm sure he just wants to keep you safe. Also, maybe he feels that you might feel better without worrying about your stash just sitting there and whether you'd reach for your stash of meds in an impulsive moment.
I think it's great you told him.
