I don't know how my memory storage system compares with others. I know a lot of times, I know something happened in that if someone said "Hey, do you remember..." I'd say yes, I remember. But I might not have explicit memories of the event. Especially if I was a bit shocky about it. For example, I was told of my grandmother's death on the day of my SAT test. My mother showed up at the testing site to tell me and to take me home. A friend's parent offered to drive me home after the test, and that's what happened. I know that's what happened, but I have no recollection of what friend, where the test was, how I felt, or anything other than that it happened. And there are other events that I would only remember happened if someone reminded me. Fairly significant events. They certainly aren't recovered memories. If at any point in the time since they happened someone had asked me I would have said yes, it happened. But only the memory *that* it happened is left. The details are gone. From time to time a picture might pop up that's from one of those times, if something similar happens or if I see some sort of reminder. But I might not be able to place the picture with the event.
About dead people in particular. My family was a big open casket funeral family. And the funerals were a family affair with kids invited. I'm sure I saw lots of dead bodies - it being a big family that mainly died young, and with that fascination kids have for sneaking peeks at grisly sights. But I only remember one.
