Most of my close friends are women for perhaps the same reason as yours are. It's really not safe to make gender stereotypic statements, but I agree that men in general spend too much time beating their chests around other guys than sharing souls like women tend to do. As far as the sex thing, for me, I admit that most relationships I have with women have a subtle sexual tension that gets surpressed (I'd like to think). But isn't this the same for women?
