Imho, Nabokov (I can't speak to Edmund White) had a *way* too refined sensibility.

Plus whether it works or not, psychoanalysis has changed vastly sinced Nabokov formed his opinion of it. Vulgar? no, I don't think so, although perhaps as practiced, or theorized, in the 1950's and 1960's, it was.
