I do the charity thing, too. My T's birthday is the week before Christmas. I usually make a donation to Habitat for Humanity (her choice) and then some years (when I have my act together) go to a local nursery that's a test site for new varieties of poinsettias and get her one of those.
In the early years, I usually did cookies in a tin.
