Yes, yes, yes, sid! I am going through the very same experience right now and I find it ever so hurtful.
I wish the anger would come, though, because maybe then it wouldn't hurt as much. Was that true for you.
I don't, on the other hand, think the other party in my situation is scary. I think he is damaged and his issues cause him to view me this way. Doesn't make it hurt any less, though. Especially since I want nothing more than to find common ground and be close to him.
