Lately, after so much self imposed isolation, I've finally been thinking about actively trying to make friends again. Just thinking about it was a big step for me. I mean, I've been happy by myself! But when I lost this last job, I suddenly felt very lonely and realized its just not healthy to be so alone.
So since I needed to contact people to use for references, I decided to first contact the woman who was very supportive to me at my job at the home office of the big retail place. She was someone I had begun a tentative friendship with, but my past problems with people caused me to hold back.
So I called her a little while ago, and now I don't know why I was so nervous! She was just so happy to hear from me! When she heard I was looking for a job again, she immediately sent me several links to local businesses and gave me several suggestions over the phone. PLUS, she said she knows someone in a high position at a company that she'll check with about jobs in my line of work! I was like, "Wow! I don't want you to think this is why I called, but wow!". She said she has several friends out of work, and she wanted to help if she could, hoping that if she ever ended up in the same position, we'll do the same for her. She's just such a positive person, I really, really like her. So we exchanged info and said we'd keep in touch and maybe get together soon.
So it just goes to show you, sometimes its worth biting the bullet and reaching out to someone even though you're afraid to, because it just might turn out better than you expected! I mean, I just wanted to get back in touch and see if she was still okay with me using her as a reference, and she ended up giving me all this info and assistance in my job search! I so wasn't expecting that!
Take THAT social anxiety!!!
