Sounds like an interesting idea. Surveys can be seen as a "weaker" method, but if you get a large sample, and you have a well-constructed survey, that can overcome statistical weakness.
Online research is really taking off. I'm sure there are articles out there about using the internet to conduct research. I've participated in a number of studies online as well. You might want to check out a good textbook on doing psychological research and look at the section on survey research. Check out the references for texts specifically about surveys and perhaps look at some of those. While it's not too hard to construct a good survey, it depends somewhat on your topic. It also helps to do a small pilot test of the survey to test it for weak questions or other construction problems.
You probably already know, but there are also websites out there that will put your survey up for you and manage confidentiality. One is surveymonkey.com
