A recent article in Scientific America "Mind" stated that physical receptors for some addiction process -- it might have been alcohol but I'm not certain -- returned to normal after one year.

This article only dealt with the increase and decrease of the number of receptors. Obviously there is a lot that nobody knows about the mechanism of addiction and effects it has on the brain.
