My story: have been able to take antidepressants in the past and Effexor worked very well with virtually not one side effect
I am now having multiple sensitivies to vitimans, fish oil and Effexor. Everything I have taken has made me feel extremely depressed and anxious. When this started my depression and anxiety were only minor. Then with the bad reaction Elavil left me in a pretty bad state for months and left me with extreme depression and anxiety.
I went to a doctor who practices both holistic and normal psychiatric meds. I was diagnosed bipolar NOS and we tried lithium orotate. It helped a little. I then had some tests done and came back very low in zinc and taurine. Began zinc and taurine supplements and within a week or two the combination got me back to my original state of minor depression, anxiety but serious sleep problems.I am grateful that I found her because honestly if I did not I would still probably be in the deep depression and anxiety that the Elavil left me in. It seems Taurine really did help at least get me back to point A which I am grateful for.
Effexor once worked wonders for me twice in the past, lifting depression and anxiety and fixing my insomnia in a few weeks. But now I seem to have sensitivities to everything and cannot take multivitimans, fish oil, magnesium or Effexor without feeling immediately more depressed.
But I think the Taurine helped A LOT and probably did something to help calm my neuro transmitters. I just really think if I can get this sensitivity to go away, I can take Effexor again and feel 100% back to normal.
Just sharing all of this to say that Taurine helped more than I expected it would and amino acids really do help (5htp was working for me for a while, then I stopped it to try Effexor again) But unfortunately now I am sensitive to 5htp again

Sorry to hear about your sensativities to meds, can be a pain right!! like i have a stomach disorder and anxiety and my stomach is preventing me from trying some things to help my anxiety, as there are things i know my stomach wouldnt like!!
So i am quite annoyed at that too!!
I went on elavil a while back to help with my stomach (for the discomfort) and it made me too tired, and nortriptyline made me nervous!!I am thinking of taurine actually, sounds good. Is it ok on your stomach?
Also you say you got tested! i would really like to get tested, how do i do that? as i would love to know what vitamins ect i need, mabie it will help my anxiety some what!
Thanks

Hi Claire,
Taurine helped me quite a bit to get back to the point I was at before I had the bad reactions to Elavil and Effexor (Effexor once worked twice but now it and a lot of other things are making it worse). So I was pretty much left feeling horrible after Elavil and don't think I would have ever felt any better if it wasn't for the Taurine. So Taurine has gotten me back to point A, which I can appreciate.
I am seeing a doctor who is both an MD and uses natural approaches like amino acid therapies to treat depression and other conditions. I got all my testing done through her (hair, adrenal, blood, food allergies and urine tests). It was some very comprehensive testing and I learned quite a bit (I have copper toxicity which could be causing these sensitivity problems)
5htp and magnesium were a little rough on my stomach, but Taurine was not. I found out through the tests that I have digestive problems as well and have slow metabolism. My doctor put me on digestive enzymes called Zypan from Standard Process vitamins which I think has helped a little. It may be worth a shot for you.
If all else fails, also look into curezone.com and look into there liver flushes, gall bladder flushes, etc. You might learn some interesting things over there about digestion problems and how it might be related to the liver.
Let me know if you have any more questions as far as the testing. I got mine done in Boston, but you can probably contact neuroreplete.com and ask them about contact information for doctors in your area.

Thanks for that!
I did email the neuroplete people, i live in the uk and they gave me some address's but they were quite far away from me which was a shame!
i will look into it, mabie ask my doctor if he knows how i can get it done.
thanks alot

I drink the energy drinks like Rockstar, Red Bull and others and they have alot of Taurine, sometimes up to 1000mg. What is the big hype about Taurine

In reply to what does taurine do?, posted by Stryker88 on February 9, 2004, at 15:48:29
Taurine is a neurotransmitter and also participates as a neurotransmitter modulator (meaning it calms any neurotransmitters that might be over firing, at least that is how I understand it). It is often very low in bipolars, and can help with glucose uptake relating to bipolar disorder. It definitely has a calming effect to it. I guess it participates in a variety of other metabolic processes as well

Can you please give me information on wether or not I should consume Taurine while on Effexer XR 150mg? Do you know what the benefit or danger of this interaction is?

I wish I could be of more help, but I am not 100% sure what interacts with Taurine. I did a quick search on yahoo under "Taurine interactions" and only found a few, but it didn't mention SSRI's or Effexor. you might want to look into it more or search again though just to be 100% sure.
