Remedies for menstrual cramps?

Posted by sb417 on February 3, 2004, at 0:21:45

Does anyone know of any good remedies, alternative or otherwise, for severe menstrual cramps? I don't get cramps often, but when I do, they are terrible. Any suggestions? My Mom used to drink a bit of blackberry brandy when she had cramps, and it worked for her. Unfortunately, I don't have any brandy in the house!

Hi, I found this on another site. The focus seems to be on relaxing the muscles. What I find works well are those heat patched you can buy that you "stick" to your abdomen ... heat helps a lot. Also, exercising a lot helps as well.

Yup, cramps are a bitch!

Herbal Therapies - To relieve cramps, drink a hot tea of 2 tsp cramp bark (Viburnum opulus) simmered for 15 minutes in 1 cup water; use this three times a day. Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) and bromelain will also relax muscles. Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) and feverfew (Chrysanthemum parthenium) can relax uterine muscles; feverfew may work as well. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) helps relax cramping muscles; however, it should be used only for a limited time. Consult a Professional. (See our Herbal Section). Evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis) applied over painful areas can also bring relief, but don't use it if there's a chance you may get pregnant.

Tension, anxiety, and painful spasms may be relieved with treatments of black haw (Viburnum lentago), skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), and black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa).

Hi Maxime. Thanks for your help. Yes, heat does help. In fact, winter is the only time of year when I seem to get severe cramps. A heating pad sounds like a good solution.

This may sound like the last thing you want to do (or can achieve) but ORGASM! Oh my God, this has been the best advice I've ever been told, because I have the worst cramps in the world, and when my OBGYN told me to do this, it has totally been a lifesaver! It releases a lot of the crampage (I'm using my own medical terms here) and gets the flow going (sorry fellas) and boy do you get relief! Whew! Anyway, that's my .02!
