I'm wondering if I should call my therapist. She's on vacation for a month (until about July 15) out of state. I've been feeling unusually depressive, and suicidal, which is relatively unusual for me. Is it okay to call her even tho' she's on 'vacation?'
I hadn't asked her about backup or anything before she left, because I was doing quite well.

Is she checking her messages? Did she leave a backup on her voice mail? My therapist does that.
Perhaps leaving her a message would be worth your while. At least she can get back to you regarding someone to see. Or can your pdoc make a recommendation?
Hope things improve for you.

I've called my shrink when he was on vacation and there was a message on his machine to contact his covering dr. along with the phone number. I'm sure you're therapist has something similar set up and I strongly urge you to call. Take care, Judy

Well, I called and there was no backup. I guess I'll wait and see if she calls.
I feel horrid -- I've known that I should have 'coordinated care' for a while because of my multiple health problems. But my health insurance is horrid, and I haven't wanted to leave my awesome therapist (who's in private practice and charges me 1/2 the rate of therapists around here). This is kind of a sign to me that I need someone who's able to 'be there.'
In the meantime, I'm finally telling friends and one of my sisters how I feel. So I have people to support me. I've given anything I could overdose on away. And I have dr's appts next week Tuesday.

I'm glad you gave your pills away, that was a very positive step. When your therapist returns, please ask her why there was no back-up- I'm really surprised. My psychiatrist, therapist and internist all coordinate my treatment, i envy your ability to get help from friends and family, i'm still working on that. please post when you feel in need of support and know we care- judy

Well, my therapist called me as soon as I left a message. (Left a message at like 10pm at night; she called at 8am next morning but I was at girlfriend's house; I called back, leaving a message to say I was out of the woods.)
I think she _could_ coordinate something. But I definitely don't have coordinated care -- it's quite fragmented at the time, the result of not having had health insurance for two years.
But I will ask. It's quite dangerous for someone to be in private practice without a backup, imho. If she couldn't handle my difficulties and needs, after starting work with me as a couples counselor (couple broke up; I stayed), she should have told me.
This is the end of the thread.
