Hi Phillipa,
I am wondering also.
TC deserves a really 'kick-*ss' job!!! (In the very BEST conotation of the word).

Thanks you guys! I had actually been getting pretty down about it and procrastinating about things I could be doing. But I kind of sucked it up and got going again. I have an appointment tomorrow with a placement agency in which I will have to take extensive tests. This was one of the things I had been procrastinating about, but I decided it was time to jump in there and get it over with. This is an agency that caters to freelance and contract work, which I've never done before. I don't really know how people go about making a full time living at it, but apparently many do.
Oddly enough, I got an email from another place I had applied to for a full time position a while back asking if I was interested in some part time freelance work. I have an interview with them on Monday. Its only 10-15 hours a week, but they pay almost twice what I've been asking an hour! I had to actually hold myself back from responding to that with "Holy crap"! So maybe if I get that, then one or two more similar jobs to go along with it, I could actually make a freaking living!
So we'll see how it all goes. Who knows, maybe freelance work will be what I've been looking for! And of course there's always the possibility that a place I do some work for will want to take me on full time.
Thanks again for asking about my work woes. I think I'm feeling a bit better about things now. I just have to try and keep up the positive attitude.
Oh, one other thing, I read this article that said the way to get a job is to place a follow up call to the company you applied to after sending them your resume. This involves doing some research to find out who the hiring manager is so that you can bypass HR (who will want you to just send your resume and wait to be contacted). After I read the article I was like, "Hey, that's a really good idea"! I think I will pick a few companies to start with, and see what I can find out. I don't expect it to be easy, but its worth a try!

Hi TC - Sounds like good news.
If you got th 10 - 15 hr job, since they're paying double - it would be like having 20-30 hours of work!
See, that last part about follow-up etc - that's what I admire - that you grab a good idea & run with it. Remember when you knew about one of those companies & were talking with some man & he was sort of blown away by some of your comments?!
All the best of luck to ya, luv, Kath
PS - how are your Mom & brother?

I know! And I almost didn't call because it was so few hours! It just shows I should follow every lead.

Thanks! When something isn't working out for me, I try to remember the best thing to do is try a new tactic. Its easy to get caught up in what you're doing and forget that though.

I think the one you're referring to is the one that is hiring in Jan. I think I still have a chance with that one (fingers crossed).

> PS - how are your Mom & brother?Mom and bro are okay, my sis is kind of a mess. She drives me crazy because she hates so many things about her life, but when you suggest she do something to change it, she always has some excuse that really doesn't justify her lack of action. For instance, she has bedbugs in her apartment. When I suggest that she move she says she doesn't have the money for the deposit. When I suggest she use her tax refund, she says the apartment she's at will let her pay by the week when she's short on money, and no one else probably will. I told her if she uses her refund she can get ahead enough that she won't have to worry about that. But she just sort of dismisses it and still complains. It wouldn't be so bad if her decisions didn't also effect my nephew. That's really frustrating.
Thanks for all the support and the kind words!

I'm excited to see what happens for you. Keeping fingers crossed.
It drives me curayzee when somebody complains, complains, complains & doesn't seem to actually WANT to change things. My DH is sometimes like that a bit. Almost like they get energy out of being negative. Sh*t - if they did something to change it, they wouldn't be able to complain any more!!
sigh.
hugs to you, Kath

Last night sucked. My phone has been failing, and I've been spending hours and hours researching the best deal. When I finally decided last night I placed the order online and got an error message. So I called the number listed and waited on hold forever. That's when I realized that although I had my phone charging all day, it hadn't charged. I tried multiple outlets and finally came to the conclusion that it was the charger that was faulty. So even though it was cold, foggy and freezing rain out, I drove to the nearest T-mobile hoping to get a new charger, or place the order through them there, or just get a new phone. Of course I got there within a minute of closing time. I then drove to the mall since there was a t-mobile there, but after seeing the packed parking lot, and much internal debate, I decided against fighting the holiday rush.
So I was really upset last night. I had no phone, and had the interview with the employment agency this morning. I ended up having a panic attack, and after finally getting to sleep sometime this morning, I managed to drag myself out of bed and get to my appointment. I was 20 minutes late because there was this intense fog that made a 20 minute drive take an hour, so I was freaking out because I couldn't even call in to let them know I was on my way.
I finally found the place, after some dubious directions, and things finally started to go right. They were sympathetic about my horrible drive. The tests went okay, although I took 2 hours on a test that was supposed to take 1 hr 10 minutes. But they said I could have extra time and I think I did fairly well. So I felt pretty good leaving there, and drove straight to the t-mobile store. After much time trying to figure out the problem with my phone, and trying to place an order online with their phone, I finally ended up getting a phone at the store. The one I got is AWESOME and was FREE! I'm tickled to death with it, and I can't believe I didn't have to pay anything (I just extended my plan, which I had planned on doing anyway). It has a better camera than my old one AND an MP3 player and radio. It came with extra memory and not only was the price waived, so was the upgrade fee to transfer my plan to the new phone. I saved around $50 off the sale price I had already planned on paying! So I'm just so excited to have had such a good day after being down for so long. I just had to tell someone about it!

I got an A in Photoshop and a high B (almost an A) in InDesign. Considering I've barely used InDesign and was mainly going on my knowledge of Quark (a similar, but completely different program) and my ability to just figure things out, I feel pretty good about about it. I've always felt worried saying I could work in InDesign when I didn't have much experience in it. So now I feel confident saying I know it. Which is good because the industry has almost entirely changed over from Quark to InDesign in the last few years. I'm sure this is fascinating to all of you non graphic artists. ;-)
